You may undertake the following works without the benefit of planning permission, subject to satisfying the criteria set out below:-

GATES, FENCES, WALLS & OTHER MEANS OF ENCLOSURE

  1. The erection, construction, maintenance, improvement or alteration of a gate, fence, wall or other means of enclosure.

 The height of any gate, fence, etc must not exceed 1m above ground level if adjacent to a public highway used by vehicular traffic or 2m above ground level in all other cases.

 The height of any gate, fence etc that has been altered, improved or maintained should not exceed its original height, or the appropriate heights mentioned above, whichever is the greater.

 Development is not permitted where the gate, fence etc is within the curtilage of a Listed Building.

 Always check your planning permission. This right may have been withdrawn by way of planning conditions - particularly on open-plan housing estates.

MEANS OF ACCESS TO A HIGHWAY

  1. Development is permitted for the laying out and construction of a means of access to a highway which is not a trunk road or a classified road, where that access is required in connection with development permitted by any Class in the GDO Schedule (other than 1 above).

PAINTING OF THE EXTERIOR OF ANY BUILDING OR WORK

  1. The painting of the exterior of any building or work.

 except if the painting is for advertisement purposes, an announcement or for directions.

 Listed Building consent may also be required as any change could affect the character and appearance of the listed building.

 Always consider the possibility of this right having been removed by Article 4 Direction or planning conditions, particularly in Conservation Areas.

"Painting" is defined as including the application of colour.
