AREA OF SPECIAL CONTROL OF ADVERTISEMENTS
Areas of Special Control of Advertisements
are established by Local Authorities in areas which they consider are of
special scenic, historic, architectural, or cultural merit, with features that
are so significant that a strict level of control must be exercised in the
interests of visual amenity.
Areas of Special Control are
to be:
o
Rural Areas
o
Other areas, which the Secretary of State considers, should be
protected on the grounds of amenity.
All defined areas must be
approved by the Secretary of State, and must be defined clearly on an Ordnance
Survey base-map to permit a clear distinction between Special Control areas and
other areas.
The following categories of
adverts are allowed in Areas of Special Control:-
o
public notices,
o
adverts inside buildings,
o
deemed consent adverts [Class 3], Stricter limits are applied.
The planning authority may
also give their specific consent for:
o
local events and activities notices,
o
advance and direction signs that are 'reasonably required',
o
public safety advertisements,
o
deemed consent adverts where the normal limits can be reasonably
exceeded.
Areas of
Special Control:
These vary from large parts of
National Parks to localised areas of towns and cities.
Your Local Planning Office
will be able to tell you whether your proposed advertisement will fall within
such a designated area.
